Stepping onto Rawhide Ranch is like taking a step back in time, to a place in your childhood you wish you still had unlimited access to. Bonsall, California is home to a very special piece of land that thousands of children consider to be home away from home every year. Equipped with everything from covered wagons and tipis, to western arenas and baby goats, chickens, and sheep, to archery ranges and rock walls, this place is rich ground to grow the imagination! We took this opportunity to host our 5th Valor Adventures here, creating a wonderful blend of western history and competition. This combination resulted in the ULTIMATE game of Capture the Flag.

In addition to capturing each other’s flags, our Gold Star mentees and their veteran mentors were also tasked with navigating throughout the western town in search for 100 bags of gold coins, 10 gold bricks, and 7 golden feathers…all before the other team reached it, outwitting the town Sheriffs as they went along.

Watching 62 Veterans and Gold Star children strategize, use teamwork (and frankly a bit of creativity) to get into each other’s camps was one of the most entertaining things we’ve seen to date. There was running, sprinting, barrel rolling, and contorting to escape flags being pulled. We have to commend our veterans for their extreme performance. They gave it their all. When we say ‘their all’ we mean THEIR ALL. These men, regardless of age or usual level of activity, spent 2 hours in a straight sprint. They pushed past their own limitations, and helped their mentees pass through theirs. There was strategizing, lesson teaching, pep talks, leadership, and lots of motivating.

One of our favorite things about these adventures is they always tend to feel like a massive family reunion. It’s a chance to slow down time and just ‘be’. The moms get a little bit of time together to relax (and in this case, enjoy a rootbeer float bar in the saloon!), the kids get to see their mentors, their mentors get to see their kids, and they ALL get to see each other.

Valor Adventures 05 Capture the Flag

Everyone put in a hard day’s work and learned the value of teamwork, accomplishing MUCH more together than they ever would apart. At the end of the day, everyone was richly rewarded by Rawhide Ranch’s delectable BBQ dinner spread, complete with bacon wrapped hot dogs and slow roasted ribs. There’s almost nothing better than sitting down to a family style dinner with the people you love, have gone to war with, have bonded with, and who provide such great comfort. As the sun set on a perfect day, for a moment, everything was perfect ‘back at the ranch’.

Valor Adventures 06

We are already counting down the days until our next adventure, and we’re so ready to make some more memories.

VALOR ADVENTURES 13: DINO QUEST

Our October Adventure is our most elaborate and ornate adventure of the year, and 2024 was no different. We rolled out as much fanfare for our paleolithic friends as possible! After all, how many times in your life are you given a chance to battle with T-Rexes, Raptors, and security forces to save the day?

VALOR ADVENTURES 11: FREEDOM FAIRWAYS

We took a new approach on our Father’s Day Adventure this year, having spent the last few on different football fields. We traded the artificial turf in for the fairway at The Rancho Bernardo Inn and Golf Course. This adventure expanded our imaginations, and was heavily influenced by how much fun we personally think golf carts are.

VALOR ADVENTURES 12: VALOR GAMES

Every Father’s Day weekend, we host one of our most important adventures of the year. For the last 7 years, we have spent the day before Father’s Day with our Gold Star Families. This has given us a chance to soften the harshness that this weekend can bring to these families, who no longer get to spend it with their dads in physical form.

VALOR ADVENTURES 09: BATTLE FIELD

Every year, on Father’s Day weekend, we host our summer adventure. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the end of the school year, the start of summer, the beginning of summer memories, but far more importantly, it’s the perfect way to honor their fathers.

MEMORIAL DAY

There was a time that Memorial Day signified school ending, summer starting, the sweet taste of cold watermelon on a hot day, and the sound of sizzling hot dogs on the BBQ. Our view of Memorial Day has been drastically changed by our mission of serving the Gold Star and Veteran communities.

VALOR ADVENTURES 08: THE HEIST

The first adventure of the year always has a sort of special spark to it. We’ve all enjoyed the cozy season and the delights it brings with it, but we are ready to be together, ready for adventure, ready to stretch our legs, and ready for a new beginning. This adventure was special in its own right.

VALOR ADVENTURES 04: ZOMBIE HUNT

Active Valor hosted its first ever Zombie Hunt, where Gold Star children and their veteran mentors had to save the day and complete their mission without being overpowered by ‘the hoard’.

GOLD STAR SPOUSE RANGE DAY

Many of our Gold Star Spouses remain courageously within the role of sole provider—provider of safety, comfort and everything else in the long list of needs from a young family. Being put into the “protector and defender” role is a daunting prospect, especially when you have never needed that title or skillset before. What better way to bolster these women’s skillsets regarding safety and protection than to hold a Range Day for them.

R.EMEMBER E.VERYONE D.EPLOYED

Active Valor is proud to partner with ADS to send care packages to our troops overseas. Thanks to ADS, Active Valor was able to Remember Everyone Deployed, as our veterans packaged countless care packages to ship overseas.
