Every Valor Adventure is designed to challenge our veteran and Gold Star pairs in a different way. Sometimes that means solving elaborate missions or racing against the clock. This time, it meant stepping off the edge of a mountain and trusting the person beside you. For our 14th Valor Adventure, we headed to Skull Canyon Zipline in the hills overlooking Southern California, where our teams spent the day soaring through the canyon, climbing aerial obstacles, and encouraging one another to take on challenges they never imagined they could accomplish. Skull Canyon’s outdoor adventure park provided the perfect backdrop for a day centered around courage, confidence, and trust, with zipline courses and elevated obstacle challenges that pushed everyone outside of their comfort zones.
As always, our day wasn’t about who could move the fastest or conquer the highest obstacle. It was about relationships. Throughout the course, our veteran mentors walked beside their Gold Star children, offering encouragement before every platform, celebrating every accomplishment, and reminding them that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s choosing to move forward anyway. It was incredible to watch hesitant first steps quickly turn into smiles, laughter, and the confidence to tackle the next challenge together.
While our veteran and Gold Star teams spent the day high above the canyon, our Gold Star spouses were able to enjoy a much-deserved morning of rest and fellowship. One of the most important traditions of every Valor Adventure is creating intentional space for these incredible women to relax, connect with one another, and simply enjoy being cared for. Today, it looked like fresh, summer beverages and an incredible vibrant spread of editable florals and a plush picnic, which offered a stark contrast beside the desert mountains. As the appetizers and crafts passed around the table, so did the stories of their husbands, their challenges, and their advice to one another.
One of the greatest lessons from Adventure 14 came naturally. Every zipline begins with a leap of faith. Every obstacle requires trust in the equipment, trust in the guides, and trust in yourself. Sometimes, you just need someone to be by your side to tell you you CAN do it. By the end of the day, those same lessons had carried over into our teams. Kids who began the morning cautiously approaching each platform finished the day cheering each other on, celebrating every victory, and walking away with a renewed belief in what they were capable of accomplishing.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible staff at Skull Canyon, whose professionalism, enthusiasm, and encouragement made every participant feel safe and supported from beginning to end. We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to our volunteers who dedicated their day to serving these families. Your willingness to invest your time and heart continues to make these life-changing adventures possible.
Adventure 14 reminded us that sometimes the greatest growth happens when we’re willing to take one courageous step into the unknown—with someone we trust by our side.
